Some time later, in their magic palace made of precious stones, all the fairies gathered ‘round the throne while Stop knelt down before the Queen. She covered her face with her hands because she was embarrassed, but still she pleaded in her own defense, “the baby was so helpless and tiny, so hungry and alone! I couldn’t simply leave it.”

But the Queen was stern. “That’s no excuse, Stop, because you should have known that I would have taken care of the child and made sure it was safe. Your duty was not only to this child, but to the other also—and you failed her. Now, without your kiss, the Princess will grow up without judgment in the use of her talents. She will be miserable, and her subjects even more so.”

“Oh! I am so sorry,” Stop said, her tears wetting the dais of the throne.

“There’s no use being sorry now,” the Queen said. “You will simply have to find a way to make amends for what you’ve done.”

Stop, whose head was in the kind Queen’s lap by now, wetting the Queen’s royal gown with her tears, promised she would try to find a way to make amends.

But how could she? Only once can the fairies bless a baby. Only once can they touch it with their magic…
